What is a mailing list?
A mailing list is a group of e-mail addresses that can all be reached by sending a single message to one address: the list address. Messages sent to the list are distributed to each of the list’s subscribers. By sending messages to the list, subscribers can have ongoing discussions with each other and need only keep track of one e-mail address
What is LISTSERV?
List Servers or LISTSERV is the electronic mailing list management software used at FIU; it allows people to use a single email address to communicate to multiple recipients. LISTSERV will allow list owners to administer their lists (e.g., add/remove subscribers, change configuration options, etc) and allow subscribers to manage their subscription settings via a completely web-based interface.
What should I do if I want to create a new mailing list?
If you would like to create a new mailing list, you will need to submit a request via the Service Request System or call the Division of IT Support Center at (305) 348-2284. Once the list is established, you will be notified and given instructions on how to maintain the list from this point forward using the web-based interface on LISTSERV.fiu.edu .
What will happen to the mailing lists I currently own or am subscribed to on Majordomo?
All active mailing lists that currently reside on Majordomo have been migrated to LISTSERV while maintaining the same configuration and subscribers list. These lists will be activated the week of June 16th.
What should I do if I need to make changes to my current list’s configuration?
If you need to make a change to a list that you own, simply go to LISTSERV.fiu.edu, log in with your assigned username and password (if you don’t have one, you will be able to assign yourself a password), and follow the easy-to-use interface menu selections to make the needed changes. Note: You will only be able to change specific configuration options if you have been granted access to do so.

If you are having problems with your mailing list contact the Division of IT Support Center at (305) 348-2284 or submit a request via the On-Line Service Request System.
How do I send e-mail to my mailing list?
Compose a new message and at the To: prompt enter your mailing list name e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org. Remember, you must be subscribed to the mailing list in order to post to it and if the list is moderated, your message will be forwarded for approval before being distributed.
What is a “moderated list”?
A moderated list forwards all incoming messages to the list owner or moderator for approval before being distributed. Having a moderated list allows a high level of security, but it means a lot more maintenance work for the list owner or moderator.
